Photo Story: Mike Dixon

Image
Mike Dixon has been the pastor of Albany Missionary Baptist Church for about 25 years or so. I chose to use him as the subject for my photo story because people really only see him for his pastor role unless they know him quite well. I chose to take this opportunity to get a look into his day-to-day life when he’s not behind the pulpit. When he’s not hunting or hiking or preaching, he is sitting in his chair with his dog at his feet, watching a U of O basketball or football game.  Due to Covid-19, Dixon has been under a lot of stress in the event that he has continuously tried every solution to make it possible for the church to meet. He goes to the building every day and teaches to sets of 10 people for 45 minutes each. He is there from 8am to 7pm every Sunday in order to get through every group of ten people until the church is allowed to meet again in full capacity.  Mike absolutely loves hunting. He hunts all over the place, mainly Eastern Oregon. About three days

It’s What I Do

Although most of the other students are probably going to talk about the scary or horrifying stories as ones that stood out to them, I actually plan to take this a completely different route. One of the stories that stood out to me the most is the story of balancing the bond between her love for her job and her love for Uxval. And when I say that it stands out, I mean that quite literally. Compared to all of her other more depressing or even thrilling stories, it seemed so out of place to talk about something as trivial as a boyfriend back home, but at the same time, it was the perfect story to tell. It made her more real to me. It made her seem like any other woman who had someone back home that she missed and even though she was a brave photographing machine, inside she was still a person with feelings and emotions. Addario talks quite a bit about how she would always love her job more than she could possibly love any man or person, and it shows her complete dedication and passion f

My Hometown

For my landmark, I chose Takena Elementary School because it’s in my neighborhood and it was convenient for me. My sister goes every day to get one of the free lunches that they are distributing due to Covid-19.  Morgan Williams stands at Takena Elementary School every day from 11:45am-2:45pm to hand out free sack lunches to families around the neighborhood.  Takena Elementary is super crowded on May 21st, with parents bringing their kids on a walk to get a lunch or even some parents that just drive by and drop their kids off.

Begg’s Tires Free Shoot

May 11, 2020 My uncle (Eddie Hernandez) is the assistant manager at the Albany Begg’s and he gave me permission to follow his guys around and shoot them during work. It worked out perfectly that it was raining, and even though there were some guys that were pretty upset about the camera being pointed at them, this is by far my favorite assignment.

Normal Life

Image
Every day around 11am, a group of turkeys attack my neighborhood mailman, surrounding his car and making so much noise that it’s impossible not to hear them, even if you live a block over.  Avery Hall, a freshman at Baker Web Academy, continues online classes, as if the virus never happened. Every morning, she gets up at 8 am to start her classes. Her school never took a break for the virus because they never had to learn how to adjust to the online learning atmosphere.  Quarantine might have changed everyone’s routine and it might have changed everyone’s goals and plans, but it definitely didn’t change my wardrobe! :) (yes I am aware that I have a lot of denim. I can’t help it.)

Social Listening: Cheerios🥣🍯

Image
For my social listening assignment, I chose to use the brand Cheerios(or General Mills, but Cheerios specifically). I realize that it's a really strange brand to do a whole project on, but I figured it might be fun to look on social media to see what people really think and how they really feel about the famous breakfast cereal. Cheerios´ Value Proposition is based on how healthy their cereal is, while still appealing to children. Cheerios message is simply ¨Eat Cheerios and live longer!¨. They are careful to appeal to parents in the health aspect, while still delighting children with the taste. Some common comments left on the Cheerios Instagram page are simple things such as ¨You guys have made my mornings something different, you don't understand¨ or To say were obsessed would be an understatement.¨, but some other comments seemed more thoughtful and original. Ariannna.marie commented, ¨I cried when I found out Cheerios were going to be gluten free, I used to eat t

Q & A with Manuel Maciel

1. How old are you?     “ 18 years young.” Where do you work?     “ For my dad at Maciel Yard Maintenance.” Has COVID-19 had a positive or negative impact on your business?     “ Positive, we still get jobs coming up. I just worked a 75 hour week last week. People are staying home more often and they're realizing that their yards aren't perfect, and when their neighbors see our trailer, they give us a call, and we get even more business.” What is your dream job?     “ I'm indecisive. I wanted to be in the blue collar field but I'm stuck between mechanic, welder, and landscaper. However, I'm leaning more towards landscaper at the moment.” What is the hardest thing you've gone through?     “ My grandma passing away on February 24th.” What is your favorite thing to do with your free time?     “ I like to build legos and go fishing and working on my trucks.
